Nowadays, many schools and colleges give importance and encourage their students to take part in foreign exchange programs. These programs allow students of one country to go to another country to learn the culture, custom and language of the host country. The main purpose of short term foreign exchange programs is to improve the language skills of the students and give them an opportunity to take part in the cultural activities and community services of the host country. The students of this program can live with a host family, but they are not required to attend any university or school classes. The short-term foreign exchange programs are ideal for those who want to learn and experience a foreign culture during their summer vacation. The duration of this program usually ranges from one week to three months.
The long-term student exchange programs also help students to know and learn new cultures, languages and ways of living. In these programs, the students have to live with a host family and attend a local high school in the host county. They are expected to take part in all curricular and co-curricular activities of the school they attend. The long-term foreign exchange programs can span from six months to ten or twelve months. In the university foreign exchange programs, the students are exchanged between sister universities. Typically, these programs come with scholarships to the participating students and can last from a single semester to the whole academic year. The students are required to attend classes at universities and live in university dormitories.
